THEATRE

The Laramie Project

Wednesday, April 30, 8 p.m.
Saturday, May 3, 8 p.m.
Sunday, May 4, 2 p.m.
Great Hall, Peterson Student Center

In my eyes, the purpose of the play is to allow the audience to be in Laramie and watch a tragedy unfold in a town not really so different from wherever we might be from, the places we call home. It is not about Laramie being a bad place. It is not about a crime that some might call horrific. It is not about whether it is right or wrong to be gay, or sexual orientation in general. It is not about politics or religion. This is a play about dialogue. In light of that, St. John’s is a great venue for this conversation. We love to talk. We also need to talk. This is a play that can start us talking.
—Alysia Johnson, director of St. John’s production of The Laramie Project

In October 1998, University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard was beaten, left tied overnight to a fence outside of Laramie, Wyoming, and died five days later in a hospital. Matthew was gay. His death provoked a firestorm of media coverage, generally regarded as the beginning of a national push for hate-crime legislation dueto the vicious and targeted nature of the crime. Five weeks after Matthew’s beating, members of the Tectonic Theater Project went to Laramie, conducting over two hundred interviews over the course of a year. Their work became the play The Laramie Project. It gives voice and weight to many viewpoints: priests and gays, law enforcement and judiciary officials, medical personnel, and the townspeople of Laramie.

This event is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted for the Santa Fe Rape Crisis & Trauma Treatment Center.
