News & PublicationsSanta FeThe Harlem Quartet Performs at St. John’s College Who What Title Where When Details The Harlem Quartet will perform Mozart’s String Quartet in D Minor (K.421), Chick Corea’s The Adventures of Hippocrates, and Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14 in D Minor (“Death and the Maiden”). The Harlem Quartet is a string quartet composed of first-place laureates of the Sphinx Competition for young Black and Latino string players. The quartet, formed in 2006, has as a mission to advance diversity in classical music while engaging young and new audiences through the discovery and presentation of varied repertoire, highlighting works by minority composers. They perform in chamber music series around the country and made their debuts this season at two prestigious New York venues, playing with guitarist Eliot Fisk at the 92nd Street Y and with jazz pianist/composer Chick Corea at the Blue Note. The Harlem Quartet will release a fourth CD this season, a collaboration with the Chicago Sinfonietta featuring a new arrangement of West Side Story for string quartet and orchestra as well as works by Michael Abels and Benjamin Lee.
