"Sketchbooks" in New Media, Paper, and Paint Explore Global Ideas at St. John's College's Mitchell Gallery

In a digital image printed on silk organza, artist Maria Barbosa renders ancient and contemporary movement across the Mexican-American border. Eve Ingalls' paper sculpture dramatizes climate change in Costa Rica. Artist Mark Cooley created an interactive installation that includes electronic-game play in response to reports on the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo. These are three of the 16 regional artists whose works—drawn from "sketchbooks" made of everything from paper and fabric to pixels and video—will be on view for the first time together in "Sketchbook to Suspension: Trajectories in the Age of Synthesis." This visionary exhibition will be at the Mitchell Gallery at St. John's College in Annapolis, Md. from May 21 to June 11. The exhibition and related events are free and open to the public.
On Sunday, May 31 several of the artists will discuss their works during the "Artists' Panel Discussion and Opening Reception." The discussion will be held in the Conversation Room (adjacent to the Mitchell Gallery) in Mellon Hall, at 3 p.m. The Opening Reception -a festive champagne and dessert gathering with music—follows in the Mitchell Gallery, from 4 to 6 p.m. The Opening Reception is hosted by the Mitchell Gallery's Next Generation.
"These artists were invited to create works in collaboration in advance of the exhibition," says curator Helen Frederick. Frederick is one of the exhibiting artists and is a visual technology professor and coordinator of printmaking at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. "Through this collaboration it became clear that site, systems, sound, ethics, classics, and urgent messages are some of the contexts for the exhibition." Frederick is also founding director of Pyramid Atlantic in Silver Spring, Md. In this exhibition she presents large, digitally created images that explore "the human condition in the fragile and violent times of today."
