Innovative Contemporary and New Media Works at St. John's College's Mitchell Gallery

Sixteen regional artists were invited to create works on paper and in new media for the Mitchell Gallery exhibition "Sketchbook to Suspension: Trajectories in the Age of Synthesis." "Sketchbook to Suspension" explores seminal ideas that begin as concepts in artists' sketchbooks-be they paper, camera, or computer-to final completion. This dynamic exhibit features contemporary works created in paper, paint, and interactive media installations. "Sketchbook to Suspension" will be on display at the Mitchell Gallery at St. John's College from May 21 to June 11. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
On Sunday, May 31 the "Artists' Panel Discussion and Opening Reception" for this exhibit features the artists, who will discuss their works in the Conversation Room (adjacent to the gallery) in Mellon Hall at 3 p.m. The Opening Reception and family program follows in the Mitchell Gallery, from 4 to 6 p.m.
"Through this collaboration it became clear that site, systems, sound, ethics, classics, and urgent messages are some of the contexts for the exhibition," says curator Helen Frederick. Frederick, who is one of the exhibiting artists, is a visual technology professor and coordinator of printmaking at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. and is founding director of Pyramid Atlantic in Silver Spring, Md. Frederick worked with the exhibiting artists in advance of the exhibition to create a collaborative exchange of ideas.
