Can Philosophy be a Science? A Lecture at St. John's College

Thomas Short will explore the question "Can Philosophy Be a Science?" in his lecture at St. John's College. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium on October 17, at 8::15 p.m.
In his lecture Short will consider the teachings of 19th-century British philosopher and mathematician Charles Peirce. "Charles Peirce was a scientist and logician as well as a philosopher credited or blamed for inventing pragmatism" says Short. "By way of introducing his thought to those presumed innocent of it, I shall discuss his conception of science and his claim that philosophy should be a science."
Short holds a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Texas and was an associate professor of philosophy at Kenyon College for 23 years. He is currently the chairman of the Board of Advisors to the Peirce Edition Project.
