The Art Students League of New York has long been known for introducing and formalizing many different artistic techniques and styles. The Mitchell Gallery presents "A Century on Paper: Prints by Art Students League Artists," an exhibition that focuses on various types of printmaking created by both well known and lesser-known American artists. The exhibition will be on display from March 6 to April 17. The Opening Reception & Family Program will be held on March 8. Art Educator Lucinda Edinberg will lead a tour of "A Century on Paper," followed by a hands-on workshop, from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
The Art Students League is one of the oldest and well-respected art schools in the United States. Its long roster of distinguished artists, a "who's who" of American art, includes Thomas Eakins, William Merritt Chase, Peggy Bacon, Wil Barnet, Georgia O'Keeffe, Reginald Marsh, Joseph Pennell, and Kenneth Hayes Miller. The exhibition "A Century on Paper: Prints by Art Students League" at the Mitchell Gallery celebrates a collection of over 60 black-and-white prints created from 1905-2001 by artists from the League. These artists experimented with a wide variety of printmaking techniques, including woodcut, embossment, lithography, aquatint, etching, mezzotint, drypoint, and serigraph. Pam Koob, curator of the Art Students League, describes this collection of prints as "a moving, visual record of America's culture and the shifting concerns of her artists over the course of the 20th century."
