History Lecture at St. John’s Explores the Golden Age of Postcards and the U.S. Naval Academy
A picture postcard is worth a thousand words. Discover the golden age of the U.S. Naval Academy through picture postcards with Captain Randall W. Bannister, USNA (ret). His lecture, “The U.S. Naval Academy in Postcards: 1900-1930” is based on his book by the same name. The Maryland History Lecture Series is co-sponsored by the Anne Arundel County Trust for Preservation and the Friends of St. John’s College. This year the series theme is “Local Stories in Maryland Life” and each lecture focuses on a different facet of Maryland history. Bannister’s lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium on November 24, at 8:15 p.m.
Bannister will chronicle life at the Naval Academy after the turn of the 20th century – known as the academy’s renaissance or golden age. This was also the golden age of picture postcards. The chronological convergence of these two events provides a richly illustrated transformation of The Yard and life within its walls from 1900-1930.
Each history lecture is preceded by a candlelit dinner. Dinners, held at 7:15 p.m. in Randall Hall, must be paid for in advance. The full series of five dinners is $165.00.
