David Stephenson, a tutor at St. John’s College will give a lecture at St. John’s College entitled “The Novel’s Moral Playground.” The lecture is free and open to the public and will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium on Friday, January 15, at 8:15 p.m.
In describing his lecture Stephenson says, “For centuries poetry and philosophy have fought like rival suitors for public favor. No one listens to the philosopher and the poet doesn’t know what he’s talking about. That’s the rumor that keeps them apart. I invite them both to reconcile their differences in the moral playground that novels like ‘Middlemarch’ can provide.”
Stephenson, who has a doctorate from the University of Maryland, joined St. John’s as a tutor in 1963.
