St. John’s Welcomes New Members to Community

St. John’s College welcomed Daniel Crowe as registrar this summer. As the college registrar, Crowe creates the class schedule, oversees student records, and coordinates institutional reporting, and foreign-exchange student visa requirements.

He earned a bachelor’s degree from Jacksonville University in Florida and received a doctorate in history at the University of Kentucky. Prior to joining St. John’s, Crowe worked in the registrar’s offices of Prescott College in Arizona, St. Mary’s University of Minnesota and the American University in Washington, D.C. 

Susan Paalman, a tutor at St. John’s since 1997, became assistant dean in June 2009. Paalman has a bachelor’s degree from Rice University and a doctorate from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. As assistant dean she oversees all aspects of student life at the college.

In addition, Mary Beth Sommers joined the college, in May 2009, as financial aid director. A graduate of Marietta College, she has a master’s from Plymouth State University and extensive experience in financial aid training, systems implementation, and business process consulting with colleges and universities throughout the country. Prior to joining St. John’s Sommers was a financial aid consultant for various companies including SunGARD Higher Education.

Felicia Martinez also joined the college the summer. Martinez, who is a tutor received her doctorate in English from Stanford University, with a dissertation on novels by Conrad, Faulkner, and Naipaul, and has taught at her alma mater for the last several years. 

Victoria Smith, formerly the college webmaster, was promoted in August 2009 to director of advancement operations and planning.
