Explore the “Life of the Mind” at St. John’s this Summer

Explore the “Life of the Mind” this summer at St. John’s College. The college’s Graduate Institute in Liberal Education is hosting a series of events, including lectures and discussions, a concert, film, and a play reading. This series brings together the St. John’s community—including the local community as well as friends of the college, Graduate Institute students, undergraduates, tutors, and alumni —to cultivate a spirit of thoughtfulness and inquiry. “Life of the Mind” events will be held on Wednesday evenings, beginning on June 23 through August 4, at 7:30 p.m. All events are held in the Great Hall of McDowell Hall, unless otherwise stated.
Upcoming events:
June 30 Discussion. “A Seminar on Wallace Stevens’ ‘Of Mere Being,’” led by Felicia Martinez, St. John’s tutor.
July 7 Lecture. “The Political Interstices of ‘King Lear,’” by Jeff Smith, St. John’s tutor.
July 14 Film. A viewing of “King Lear,” followed by a discussion led by Anita Kronsberg, St. John’s tutor. Note: This event will be held in the Hodson Conference Room in Mellon Hall.
July 21 Discussion. “What is Philosophy?” by Matt Caswell, Michael Grenke, Henry Higuera, and Michael Weinman, St. John’s tutors.
July 28 Concert and discussion. Five fables of La Fontaine, translated and set to music by Elliott Zuckerman, St. John’s tutor emeritus and performed by Eric Stoltzfus, tenor, accompanied at the piano.
August 4 Reading. A reading of “Medea,” by Marcel Widzisz, St. John’s tutor, who will be joined by colleagues.
