Annapolis Treasurer Bronté Jones Receives Hamer Award

St. John's College Treasurer Dr. Bronté Jones was among six women honored for their contributions to racial justice, equal opportunity and community service at the 13th annual Fannie Lou Hamer Awards Oct. 5.The awards ceremony was co-sponsored by St. John's, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee, Inc., and the Office of the Attorney General. The awards are named for civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer, who worked tirelessly until her death in 1977 to obtain voting rights and equal opportunities for minorities. The committee selects women who through professional and volunteer service carry on Mrs. Hamer's ideals.
Dr. Jones has held leadership positions in higher education for the past decade. As treasurer of St. John's College in Annapolis, Dr. Jones oversees the college's finances, business office, buildings and ground operations, personnel, and print shop operations. As an officer of the college, she helps lead the college's long-term financial and management planning and helps establish policies and practices to ensure sound and efficient operations at St. John's.
Born in Cambridge, Maryland, Dr. Jones earned a B.S. in Finance and an MBA from American University. She earned her PhD in Higher Education Administration from the University of Texas at Austin. In 2000, Dr. Jones also completed a professional education program at Harvard's Institute for Higher Education, and she was recently accepted to the HERS Wellesley Institute, a leadership program in higher education.
Dr. Jones worked in financial positions for seven years, from 1989-1996. She was an Assistant Comptroller for the Eneric Petroleum Corporation; Assistant Comptroller, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc; and a Senior Project Manager for the Texas State Auditor's Office in Austin.
In 1998. Dr. Jones joined Huston-Tillotson College in Austin, Texas, as Assistant Dean of Financial Services. From 2000-2004, she served as Dean of Enrollment Management. She was appointed Vice President for Administration and Finance in 2004, a position she held until joining St. John's in 2006. Dr. Jones taught finance and economics at Huston-Tillotson and accounting at Austin Community College. She holds active memberships in the Annapolis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (for which she serves as treasurer); the Small Institutions Council of the National Association of College and University Business Officers; and the National Black MBA Association.
In Annapolis, she serves on the board of the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County. She is also treasurer of the Lupus Foundation of America, Greater Washington Area Chapter. In Texas, she chaired the Texas Consortium of Historically Black Colleges and Universities for six years.
