Immigrant Stories in Song at St. John’s College

Inspired by American composer Lee Hoiby’s song “Lady of the Harbor,” soprano Catherine Charlton and pianist Susan Hoskins will perform “Our Lady of the Harbor: Stories from Ellis Island” on March 28, at 3 p.m. The concert, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Great Hall at St. John’s College; seating is limited.
The music tells stories from the homelands of many of the immigrants who came through Ellis Island. The program includes music by composers Rodrigo, Ravel, Grieg, Brahms, Bizet, and Rossini, as well as American composer Libby Larson.
Charlton has performed in opera with symphony orchestras and at festivals from coastal North Carolina to the Breckenridge Music Festival in Colorado with a repertoire that includes music from Bach to Sondheim. She is especially delighted to perform at St. John’s, where her son, Peter White, is a sophomore. Hoskins has been on the faculty of Meredith College as a coach-accompanist and has worked with the Opera Company of North Carolina, the National Opera Company, and the Fletcher School for the Performing Arts.
