Curator to Lecture at St. John's College on the US Naval Academy Museum's Collection

James Cheevers, associate director and senior curator at the United States Naval Academy Museum, will give a lecture at St. John's College entitled, "The Remarkable Acquisitions of the United States Naval Academy Museum." The lecture is the last in this year's History Lecture Series sponsored by St. John's College and the Anne Arundel Trust for Historic Preservation. The lecture will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium on Tuesday, March 17, at 8:15 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
The lecture will be preceded by a candlelit dinner held in Randall Hall at 7:15 p.m. Dinner reservations must be paid in advance: the cost is $30. To make a reservation contact Anne Zolkower at 410-626-2507 or anne.zolkower@sjca.edu by March 12.
Cheevers' lecture will focus on the collections housed at the U.S. Naval Academy Museum, which date from 1834; the museum currently has approximately 50,000 acquisitions. Cheevers will explore he says, "the detective work necessary to authenticate and document museum objects." He will also reveal some of the fakes and forgeries "and tell about amusing finds among the treasures such as a plank from the 'Good Ship Lollipop.'"
After serving in the U.S. Army Cheevers became the first civilian curator of the U.S. Army Infantry Museum. In 1967, Cheevers joined the U.S. Naval Academy Museum.
