Dean’s Lecture at St. John’s College Opens Academic Year

Pamela Kraus, dean of the Annapolis campus of St. John’s College will deliver the opening lecture for the academic year. Her lecture, “The Beginning of the Beginning: Reflections on Cartesian Method,” is free and open to the public and will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium on Friday, August 27, at 8:15 p.m.
In describing her lecture Ms. Kraus notes, “René Descartes claims in the ‘Meditations on First Philosophy’ that radical doubt of all opinions must take place before serious inquiry begins if knowledge is to have a firm foundation. My lecture explores the roots of this claim, which are formulated in a very different fashion in his earliest writing, ‘Rules for the Direction of the Native Intelligence’.” Descartes (1596-1650) was a French philosopher.
