The 28th annual St. John’s College- U.S. Naval Academy croquet match takes place Saturday, April 17, at 1 p.m. on the campus of St. John’s College. Media are invited to cover the contest for the prized Annapolis Cup, which the Johnnies have won 22 times; Navy has taken home the cup 5 times. The croquet match continues to attract more than 1,000 spectators to a free event marked by elegant and outrageous costumes, lawn parties, music by groups from the Naval Academy and St. John’s, and a festive outpouring of spring fever. Will the Johnnies keep the Annapolis Cup in 2010?

Details: The ceremonial first ball is struck at 1 p.m. The match generally runs about two hours in duration. The lawn party continues through the afternoon.

Rain date: Sunday, April 18.

Photo opportunity: To facilitate preview stories, the teams meet for informal practice, interviews, and group photos on Tuesday, April 13, at 4 p.m. on the front lawn of the St. John’s campus. Mids are in their croquet whites; Johnnies may wear shoes.
