Remembering former tutor Wendy Allanbrook

Former St. John’s tutor Wendy Allanbrook died Thursday, July 15, in Oakland, California.
Dr. Allanbrook joined the St. John’s faculty in 1969 and served the college for 25 years, making major contributions to the study of music at the college. She received her bachelor’s degree from Vassar College and her master’s degree in musicology from Stanford. She received her PhD in music history from Stanford in 1974.
From 1987 to 1990 and again from 1992-1994, Dr. Allanbrook served as assistant dean at St. John’s. She received numerous awards and fellowships during her tenure at the college, including those from the National Humanities Center, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Dr. Allanbrook first went to the University of California, Berkeley, in 1994 as the Ernest Bloch Visiting Professor of Music. She later joined the permanent faculty and chaired the university’s music department.
Dr. Allanbrook is survived by her son John Vincent Allanbrook, of Oakland, California; Timothy Allanbrook of New York, New York; and a sister, Stephanie Watkins.
