Performance of Schubert’s “Winterreise” at St. John’s College

St John's College tutor Eric Stotlzfus and tutor emeritus Elliott Zuckerman will perform the first 12 songs in the great song cycle of Schubert’s “Winterreise,” a setting of 24 poems by Wilhelm Müller. Before each song is performed, the poem will be spoken in German by former St. John’s tutor Gisela Berns. The performance, which is free and open to the public, will be held at the backstage at the Francis Scott Key Auditorium on Sunday, October 21 at 4 p.m.
Stotlzfus received his bachelor’s in music from Goshen College and his master's degrees in musicology and library science from the Catholic University of America. He has been the music librarian at St. John’s College since 1991 and became a tutor in 1996.
Zuckerman joined St. John’s as a tutor in 1961. He holds a bachelor’s in humanities and a master’s and doctorate in European cultural history from Columbia as well as his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from Cambridge University.
Berns was a tutor at St. John’s from 1967 until she retired in 2003. Berns grew up in the Black Forest of Germany, where she earned a doctorate in classics and philosophy from Heidelberg University.
