St. John’s Welcomes Community to Great Issues Program in Honor of the Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Are we living in a world that resembles Dr. King’s dream? “Where Are We Now?” invites citizens and community leaders to gather together and address this question as a celebration of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and a continuation of his work. The program opens with a keynote address from Dr. Julianne Malveaux, president of Bennett College for Women and noted economist, on Saturday, January 7 at 9:30 a.m., followed by a panel discussion at 10 a.m. and seminars co-led by faculty members from St. John’s and Sojourner-Douglass College from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Dr. Malveaux’s keynote address and the panel discussion will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium. Participants should arrive at 9 a.m. for registration and a continental breakfast. All events are free; the seminars, however, require advance registration. Call 410-626-2530 or register online.
Dr. Malveaux’s speech is titled “Economics & Race: Perspective on our Nation’s Future.” Dr. Malveaux is an economist, author, and commentator noted for her progressive vision. She contributes widely to the public dialogue on issues such as race, culture, gender, and their economic impacts in America. Dr. Malveaux received her Ph.D. in economics from MIT and holds honorary degrees from Sojourner-Douglass College, Marygrove College, the University of the District of Columbia, and Benedict College. Currently, Dr. Malveaux serves on the boards of the Economic Policy Institute, The Recreation Wish List Committee of Washington, D.C., and the Liberian Education Trust.
Saturday’s panel discussion with local community leaders will focus on questions such as “Where are we now?” and “What would Dr. King think of the progress that we have made as a society in realizing his dreams?” In seminar, participants will discuss Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, following the panel discussion.
The Great Issues program is presented by St. John’s College and The Friends of St. John's College. Since the 1990s, Great Issues programs have brought together community members and noted speakers to explore key issues and ideas.
These events are co-sponsored by St. John’s College, The Friends of St. John’s College, Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture, and Sojourner-Douglass College.

The fifth annual “Lift Every Voice” concert will be located in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium in Mellon Hall. The concert is also free of charge, though seating is limited.
