Maryland’s First Lady and Five Other Women to be Honored at the 16th Annual Fannie Lou Hamer Reception at St. John’s College

Maryland’s First Lady, Judge Katie O’Malley, is one of six women to be honored at the 16th Annual Fannie Lou Hamer Reception, held at St. John’s College in Annapolis. Each of the honorees are Anne Arundel County women who keep Hamer’s legacy alive. This event will be held in the Francis Scott Key auditorium and lobby, from 4 to 6 p.m., on Sunday, October 2.

Tickets are $35.00 and may be purchased in advance by calling 410-269-1524; tickets may also be purchased at the door. Proceeds from the event will be used to pay for the newly completed Coretta Scott King Memorial Garden located at Sojourner Douglass College in Edgewater, Md.  For more information, please visit: www.mlkmd.org.

The 2011 recipients of the prestigious Fannie Lou Hamer Awards are: Maryland's First Lady, Judge Katie O'Malley; Natalie Ballard; Colleen Y. Moon; Rhonda Caldwell Dove; Michelle Le Furge; and Dana Posley Herbert.  Read photos and bios of  the award winners...

The award is named after the feminist and civil rights activist the late Fannie Lou Hamer who received national acclaimed when she gave an impassionate speech at the 1964 National Democratic Convention regarding the voting rights of African Americans being abridged by southern law-enforcement officials.
