The 29th annual St. John’s College-Naval Academy croquet match takes place Saturday, April 30, at 1 p.m. on the front lawn of St. John’s College. Media are invited to cover the contest for the prized Annapolis Cup, which the Johnnies have won 23 out of 28 times. The croquet match continues to attract more than 2,000 spectators to a free event marked by elegant and outrageous costumes, music by groups from the academy and St. John’s, and a general community outpouring of spring fever. St. John’s won in 2010. Will the Johnnies keep the Annapolis Cup in 2011?
Details: The ceremonial first ball is struck at 1 p.m. The match generally runs about two hours in duration. The party continues through the afternoon.
Rain date: Sunday, May 1
Photo opportunity: To facilitate preview stories, the teams meet for informal practice, interviews, and group photos at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, on the front lawn of the St. John’s campus. Mids are in their croquet whites; Johnnies may wear shoes.
