National Public Radio’s Alan Cheuse will speak at a ticketed reception to celebrate “The Art of the Book” exhibit and silent auction. The evening includes a rare and decorative book sale, conversations with accomplished authors, slam poetry and flash-fiction readings, lively music, festive food and cocktails. The reception will be held in the Mitchell Gallery and Francis Scott Key Lobby on Saturday, June 25 from 7 to 10 p.m., with a VIP pre-reception gathering from 6 to 7 p.m.
Alan Cheuse is the author of five novels, including the recently published “Song of Slaves in the Desert”. He serves as the book commentator for NPR’s evening-news-magazine "All Things Considered." Mr. Cheuse will be speaking on “Reading and Writing in a Digital Age.”
Lisa Simeone, host of NPR’s “World of Opera” will preside over the evening’s events.
Also among the evening’s speakers is book artist Kerry McAleer-Keeler, director of the Corcoran College of Art and Design’s masters program in art and the book. Ms. McAleer-Keeler will speak on “A New Chapter: Defining the Book Form in the Digital Age and Why Artists' Books Will Survive.”
Art and book lovers will savor “The Art of the Book,” a special exhibition from June 17-25—and ticketed reception on June 25—at the Mitchell Gallery at St. John’s College. The exhibit will feature works by more than 40 regional artists. These artists will create two- and three-dimensional works inspired by books to be sold in a blind and silent auction, occurring both online and in the gallery; proceeds of this fundraiser benefit the Mitchell Gallery’s education programs.
