Wartime Annapolis Subject of History Lectures at St. John’s College’s

The Annapolis History Consortium, an informal organization of more than 100 professional and amateur historians who meet to discuss the history of the Annapolis area, will present “Annapolis, Awakened by War.” This event commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Costumed narrators will portray events occurring in Annapolis in 1861, the first year of the war. The presentation will also include photos as well as documents written by Annapolitans and soldiers who describe the landing of thousands of troops at the U.S. Naval Academy. The performance will be held on April 12, at 8 p.m.
The Maryland History Lecture series is co-sponsored by the Anne Arundel County Trust for Preservation and the Friends of St. John’s College. Each history lecture is preceded by a candlelit dinner. Dinners, held at 7:15 p.m., in Randall Hall, must be paid for in advance. The full series of five dinners is $165.00. A single reservation is $33.00. March 8: “Civil War Comes to America,” by Craig Symonds, historian and professor emeritus, U.S. Naval Academy
April 12: “Annapolis, Awakened by War.” The Annapolis History Consortium presents a narrated drama of Civil War coming to Annapolis.
May 17: “Introducing: ‘Annapolis, City on the Severn,’” by Jane McWilliams, a historian celebrating the publication of this history of Annapolis (scheduled for release May 2011).
