A. Aubrey Bodine Photographs of Maryland at St. John’s Mitchell Gallery

Several of the 40, black-and-white images in the Mitchell Gallery exhibition “Of Water, Fields, and Bricks: the Photography of A. Aubrey Bodine” made Bodine a national and international photography star in the mid 20th-century. This exhibition of Bodine’s acclaimed images of Maryland people and places, including Annapolis, will be on view at the Mitchell Gallery from October 24 to December 17. During the Opening Reception & Family Program, held on October 24, Art Educator Lucinda Edinberg will lead a tour of “Water, Fields, and Bricks,” followed by a hands-on workshop on October 24 from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
This exhibition, curated by Bodine’s daughter, features some of his most iconic works. These include waterfront scenes such as “Pratt Street Dock Workers” and “Iced in−Spa Creek, Annapolis.”
Bodine lit the pages of the Baltimore Sun with his exceptional images of Maryland life, rural landscapes, dock workers, and other distinctive places and people. Bodine held his job as a feature photographer at the Sun until the day he died in 1970, at age 64. At the Sun, Bodine had a fully equipped commercial darkroom at his disposal. Bodine’s early colleagues referred to him as a darkroom master. He is considered a pictoralist whose technical savvy was matched by his creative vision. Bodine was the first photographer awarded Honorary Fellowships for both the Photographic Society of America and the National Press Photographers Association.

October 24 Opening Reception & Family Program. Art Educator Lucinda Edinberg will lead a tour of “Water, Fields, and Bricks,” followed by a hands-on workshop from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
November 10 Gallery Talk. Jennifer B. Bodine will give a slide lecture on “Water, Fields, and Bricks” at 7 p.m.
November 14 Sunday Afternoon Tour. Art Educator Lucinda Edinberg will lead a tour of the “Water, Fields, and Bricks” exhibition at 3 p.m.
December 2 Book Club. Join Mitchell Gallery Book Club members for a docent tour of the “Water, Fields, and Bricks” exhibition, followed by a discussion of Tom Horton’s “An Island Out of Time: A Memoir of Smith Island in the Chesapeake,” from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Registration is required. December 8 Art Express. Art Educator Lucinda Edinberg will give a lunchtime gallery talk on “Water, Fields, and Bricks” from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. Juice and sodas will be provided.
