On Friday night, October 15, tutor Peter Kalkavage will deliver a lecture entitled, “Principles of Motion and the Motion of Principles: Hegel’s Inverted World.”

Mr. Kalkavage provided the following description of his lecture:

This lecture is about the chapter, “Force and Understanding,” from Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit. I will take us through the dialectic of force, law, and explanation, with emphasis on what Hegel means by an inverted, or reversed, world. I will also attempt to reveal how Hegel gets from the paradoxes of physics to self-consciousness. I have tried to tell the story of force in such a way that those who haven't read Hegel would still be able to follow the account.

See the lecture schedule for 2010-2011
