The Caritas Society of St. John’s College, Annapolis, Maryland, is a non-profit membership organization. More than 200 people from the Annapolis community and the college belong to Caritas. Members enjoy many opportunities to share their interests. They connect with a variety of friends who support St. John’s and its distinctive liberal arts program. Membership is open to everyone interested in the activities of the Caritas Society.
Caritas has two purposes: 1) to support the St. John’s Program by providing need-based financial aid to students; 2) to promote enduring relationships between St. John’s and the larger Annapolis community
The Caritas Society accomplishes its first purpose by awarding eight to ten financial aid grants each year to students whose college expenses are greater than their financial resources and are in need of additional funding in order to remain at the college. Caritas supports St. John’s in other ways, too. Examples of special initiatives include:
- An annual scholarship to a deserving student through the St. Johns College Endowment Fund
- A significant gift to the Friends Scholarship Fund for Students from Maryland in Memory of Jeff Bishop (created in 2007)
- A contribution to the Christopher B. Nelson Endowment for Student Scholarships
- A special one-year scholarship for academic year 2012-13 in honor of the 75th anniversary of the colleges New Program, initiated in 1937
- Five book awards each year to students from the Mary D. and Richard D. Weigle Great Books Fund to cover the cost of Program books
- Several $50 memorial donations to the Greenfield Library each year
- A prize for outstanding service to the Annapolis community by a St. Johns senior presented at graduation
- Caritas also administers the Belknap Fund from which two prizes are awarded annually to students for outstanding contributions in the field of music. Prize categories include: 1) the best musical composition; 2) the best student paper on a musical work
The Caritas Society accomplishes its second purpose by presenting social gatherings, instructive and entertaining presentations, and special events. Members are encouraged to learn about St. Johns and to take advantage of its many educational and cultural opportunities.
Monthly meetings feature speakers on a wide range of topics, as well as musical and dramatic performances. Caritas also hosts fundraising events that are open to the public. Examples are the popular Meet the Authors program, which brings nationally known writers to the St. Johns campus each fall, and a much-anticipated, light-hearted theatrical presentation in the early spring.
The Caritas Society does all of this and more. Tell your friends about us!
