Save the Date – Parents’ Weekend 2010
September 30 – October 1
Parents are invited to join us this fall for Parents’ Weekend 2010, September 30 – October 1. This is the weekend we set aside to welcome the parents of all our current students for several days of special programming, including class visits, designed to give you a brief taste of the work in which your son or daughter is engaged with us. The weekend will begin with your son or daughter’s seminar on Thursday night, and conclude with luncheon on Saturday afternoon.
For the first time, this year’s Parents’ Weekend activities are centered around a single work from the St. John’s curriculum, Herman Melville’s short story, Benito Cereno. A suspenseful tale of an uprising on a Spanish merchant ship in the late eighteenth century, the novella raises questions of race, justice, communication, and power, all in the context of a fast-paced narrative that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Benito Cereno will be the text for both the Friday night Worrell Lecture and the parent seminar, and a copy will be sent to all who register.
