Frequently Asked Questions

Are there limits to the number of guests who may attend graduation?
We do not officially limit seating for the event. If you are planning on bringing more than ten people, please let us know by emailing Mary Anne Burke at maburke@sjcsf.edu or by phone at 505-984-6109.

How long is the commencement ceremony?
The ceremony will last approximately two hours.

Do I need to r.s.v.p. for other events that weekend?
We do not require a formal response for any commencement activities.

Are there invitations for commencement?
Late March, all students who are preparing to graduate can get up to ten commencement invitations from the President’s Office. Graduates may send them to whomever they please. If needed, additional invitations may be obtained from the President’s Office after April 15.

May family and friends attend the President’s cocktail reception on Friday on the Fishpond Placitas?
Family members and friends attending commencement activities are invited to join graduates attending the one hour reception. Following the reception, you may wish to make dinner reservations at one of the many local restaurants.

What is appropriate dress for commencement ceremonies?
Commencement exercises are held outside on the placita, in front of Meem Library. Because of the intensity of the sun and the high altitude, we suggest that you wear sunscreen and/or sun protection. Water will be provided.  In the event of rain, the ceremony will be moved indoors to the Gymnasium.

What is served at the reception following the commencement ceremony?
A buffet lunch will be served for all attendees in the Peterson Student Center, first floor hallway.

How do I get photos of the ceremony?
Students are given a photo order form for group photos before graduation. Individual photos are taken of students as they receive their diploma and may be ordered after graduation by contacting the photographer directly. It takes approximately six weeks to process the commencement photos.

Where do we park?
Parking is restricted to the Visitors’ Parking Lot, located at the entrance to the campus, along Camino Cruz Blanca, and Monte del Sol.

Where may we purchase College memorabilia?
You will be able to make purchases at the campus bookstore (on the first floor of Peterson Student Center) one hour before commencement and following the ceremony.
