June 1987  
In a letter to St. John’s President William Dyal, Elizabeth “Zibby” Myers Mitchell agrees to fund an art gallery at St. John’s College.

September 1989  
Senator and Mrs. Julian Lapides become the first Mitchell Gallery members. Senator Lapides chairs the first membership campaign.

September 1989
Mitchell Gallery grand opening with “Image and Word,” curated by Burton Blistein, the first gallery director.

November 1989   
Architectural firm Weller, Fishback, and Bohl receives a citation from the American Institute of Architects for the Elizabeth Myers Mitchell Gallery and Mellon Hall renovations.

January 1989
John B. Moore Jr. chairs the first meeting of the Mitchell Gallery Committee.

September 1990
“Art of Our Time: Works on Paper from the Olga Hirshhorn Collection” opens with a visit from collector Olga Hirshhorn.

January 1991
Hydee Schaller joins the Mitchell Gallery staff.

September 1992
“Coming of Age of American Sculpture: The First Decades of the Sculptors Guild, 1930s-1950s” results in a gift to the college of major sculpture from participating artist Robert Cronbach.

March 1993
“Subjects: Prints & Multiples by Jonathan Borofsky 1982-1991” opens with a visit from artist Jonathan Borofsky.

September 1993
“The Eye of the Collector: Ludwig and Rosy Fischer and the Rise of German Expressionist Art” opens with a visit from collector Anna Fischer.

September 1994
Robert Giddings hosts a black-tie reception at the Blue Heron Center, Quiet Waters Park to attract new Gallery members.

February 1996
Art educator Lucinda Edinberg joins the Gallery staff. Family events, school tours, Art  Express, and other exhibit-related events for the community are launched.

April 1996
“Space and Place: Mapmaking East and West” is curated by St. John’s tutor Cordell Yee.

April 1996
 “Auction of the Finer Things” with bestselling author Peter Mayle and co-chaired by Maryanne Spencer and Judi Kardash.

June 1999
“The Fine Art of Craft: National Craft Show of Maryland,” organized with the Maryland Federation of Art and the League of Maryland Craftsmen, opens.

October 1999
“10th Anniversary Wine Auction and Celebration of a Decade” takes place with Judith Martin, aka, “Miss Manners.”

Midnight on New Year’s Eve 2000
Maryanne Spencer becomes new chairman of the Mitchell Gallery Board of Advisors. John B. Moore Jr. is honored as chairman emeritus.

January 2000
The Mitchell Gallery launches its first endowment campaign. The  Junior Membership Program is launched and enrolls 25 members during the opening reception for “The Phelan Collection of Western Art.” 

February 2000
“Chairs! Chairs! Chairs! Reception and Auction” fundraiser is a success.

September 2000
The Mitchell Gallery Committee of the St. John’s Friends Board becomes The Mitchell Gallery Board of Advisors.

November 2000
A focus group of people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s is held to discuss how to attract a younger audience to the Mitchell Gallery.

November 2001
The group that will later be called The Mitchell Gallery Next Generation, created to attract a younger audience,  holds its first event during the “Josef Albers” exhibition.

March 2003
“Celebration of Life: Graphic Works by Alexander Calder” opens.

June 2004
 The Mitchell Gallery’s first biennial exhibition, “small to Large: Anne Arundel County Juried Exhibition,” with juror Wil Scott, opens.  

November 2004
Next Generation’s celebration, “An Evening with Rembrandt and Friends,” is held in conjunction with “Rembrandt: The Consummate Etcher and Other 17th-Century Printmakers.”

March 2005
“Heroes, Villains, and Mermaids: The Fantastical World of Ronald Markman” opens.

August 2005
The Mitchell Gallery is awarded a $5,000 grant from the Smithsonian Community Grant Program, funded by Metlife Foundation, for “Magic, Myths, and Minerals: Chinese Jades from the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery” public programs.

October 2005
The Gallery presents “Reflections: Celebrating 16 Years of the Mitchell Gallery,” an online and live art auction and fundraiser.

February 2006
Next Generation’s festive party, “Swing into Art,” is held in conjunction with “The Art of Music from the Baltimore Museum of Art”

June 2006
Next Generation’s “Champagne in the Courtyard Opening Reception” is held for the second biennial juried exhibition, with jurors Carla Massoni and Larry Schroth.

September 2006 
Dennis Younger is named chairman of the Mitchell Gallery Board of Advisors.

February 2007
 Next Generation’s “Hot Light/Cool Art: A Return to the 20th Century” dance party is held in conjunction with “Graphics by 20th Century Masters from the Cochran Collection.”

June 2008
Next Generation’s “pARTy Beneath the Stars” celebrates the third biennial juried exhibition, with juror, Stephen Phillips.

November 2008
Next Generation’s “Leonardo” festivities close “The Inventions of Leonardo da Vinci.”

January 2009
Next Generation’s “Spirit of Africa” reception celebrates “The Spirit of Africa” exhibition.

May  2009
“Sketchbook to Suspension: Trajectories in the Age of Synthesis” opens.
