“The Art of the Book”
A Mitchell Gallery Special Exhibit, Silent-Auction, Fundraiser, and Celebration
Exhibition. June 17 - 25 "The Art of the Book", a special exhibit at the Mitchell Gallery at St. John’s College, will feature works by more than 45 local and regional artists. These artists will create two- or three-dimensional works inspired by books to be sold in a blind and silent auction, occurring both online and in the gallery; proceeds of this fundraiser benefit the Mitchell Gallerys education programs.
Silent Auction. June 17 - 25 Artwork in "The Art of the Book" exhibition will be sold by blind silent auction to benefit the education programs of The Mitchell Gallery. Bidding may take place in the gallery during the regular exhibition hours, online on the college’s website beginning June 1, or during the closing reception on June 25.

Workshop. Saturday, June 25, 1:30-3:30 p.m. The Corcoran College of Art + Design will present a Japanese Stab Binding workshop led by artist Kristín Guðbrandsdóttir. Fee $50. Registration required.*
Receptions. Saturday, June 25 Please join art and book lovers at the general and VIP ticketed receptions to celebrate "The Art of the Book" exhibit and silent auction:
- General Reception. 7 - 10 p.m. A celebration of art and books, artists and authors, with flash fiction, poetry, art and rare book auctions, book signings, summer foods, cocktails, prizes, and fun. Admission $55, includes admission to the speaker presentation as space permits. Reservations required.*
- VIP Gathering. 6 -7 p.m. Special pre-reception gathering with authors, artists, and special guest Alan Cheuse, author and book commentator for NPR’s All Things Considered. VIP admission $125, includes all the evening activities and reserved seating at the speaker presentation. Reservations required.*
Program Highlights:
- Lisa Simeone, St. John’s alumnus and host of nationally syndicated “Soundprint”, “Chicago Symphony Orchestra”, and “NPR World of Opera” , also writes for Baltimore’s Style magazine.
- Alan Cheuse, book commentator for NPR’s "All Things Considered", will speak on “Reading and Writing in a Digital Age.”
- Kerry McAleer-Keeler, a book artist and director of the Corcoran College of Art + Design’s master’s program in Art and the Book, will speak on “A New Chapter: Defining the Book Form in the Digital Age and Why Artists' Books Will Survive.”
- Author Readings: Temple Cone, Debra Garner, Barbara Klein Moss, Laura Oliver, and Hank Pugh
- Music: Viki Garte, Andy Garte and Daniel Puckett

The Mitchell Gallery
The Mitchell Gallery, located on the campus of St. John’s College, attracts more than 10,000 visitors a year to its museum-quality exhibitions. Dedicated to bringing art of world renown to Annapolis since it opened in 1989, the Mitchell Gallery serves Annapolis and Anne Arundel County as a resource for viewing, discussing, and learning about fine art. The Gallery connects the liberal arts with the visual arts.
