Search and Rescue
St. John’s Search and Rescue was founded in 1971. SAR teaches lifesaving techniques that may be put to use in a real-life mission. The team offers training in leadership, backcountry medicine, communications, wilderness navigation, and technical skills. Once a member is proficient in these skills they will be expected to teach and lead new members. SAR is open to all interested parties. Lack of experience and/or physical fitness does not exclude one from becoming part of the team. It is a multifaceted endeavor with opportunities for all to participate, requiring only the participant’s commitment and enthusiasm.

Outdoor Adventure Trips
Spring Break Raft Trip
Enjoy a week long trip down the beautiful San Juan River located in South East Utah. Students will enjoy the simple life of floating downriver while having the opportunity to explore remote desert canyons and see firsthand what millions of years of geological erosion looks like. Bring your notebooks because this will be an opportunity to study native riparian zones and the ever so fragile desert ecosystem.

Carlsbad Caverns Trip– Long Weekend
Carlsbad Caverns National Park contains 113 caves, formed when sulfuric acid dissolved the surrounding limestone, creating some of the largest caves in North America. Students will visit the main cave and the Slaughter Canyon Cave, and perhaps a third cave, time permitting. Nearly 400,000 Brazilian (more commonly called Mexican) free-tail bats call Carlsbad Cavern home. Students will also have the opportunity to observe the bat flight at sunset.
Thanksgiving Weekend Raft Trip
Spend Thanksgiving Weekend floating amidst the wildlife and rock formations that expose millions of years of geological history. Students will enjoy the magnificent canyons of the San Juan River in southeastern Utah.
Rock Climbing Trips
Rock climbing opportunities for all levels. Climbing will take place at White Rock and El Rito. If the weather is bad, we will climb at the Stone Age Climbing Gym in Albuquerque. If there is interest we can offer more climbing trips as well as an anchor and knots course.
Ski/Snowboard Trips
The SAC will sponsor several overnight skiing and snowboarding trips to Wolf Creek, the Santa Fe Ski Basin, and Taos Ski Valley (snow permitting.) Dates for trips will be announced starting mid-semester & are subject to ski area conditions. Included with the Wolf Creek Overnight trips are accommodations at one of the area’s cabins, food, transportation, and equipment rental. Trips for Wolf Creek typically depart from the SAC on Saturdays at noon and return late Sunday evening. Taos and Santa Fe trips are usually day trips.
