Computer Information for Incoming Freshmen

COMPUTER INFORMATION FOR INCOMING FRESHMEN

Dorm Network Connections

All of the dorms at St. John’s College are wired for access to the Internet and the campus network.   In addition, wireless network access is available in a number of common spaces around campus for use with laptop computers. You will need a “Network Account” (see below) and instructions to connect your computer to the campus network.  These will be provided to you during the registration process. A network cable may be purchased in the bookstore.

The Information Technology Services (ITS) office operates the campus network and provides consulting and support assistance you may need.   In order to participate in the college network, and obtain ITS support services, your computer must meet the standards found at the end of this document.

Student Computer Center

The Student Computer Center is located on the lower level of Evans Science Laboratory.  It is equipped with Windows and Macintosh computers, laser printers and a scanner.  The primary purpose of the facility is to provide you with access to Office applications, email, Web, and other applications needed for, and of benefit to, your academic work.  With your ID/card key, the center is accessible twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week during the academic year.  Student Assistants are available in the center at designated times to provide you with assistance in the use of campus computer resources or computer problems.

Network Account

You are provided with a “Network Account,” a username and password that you will use to access campus computers, the campus network, your college-provided personal email and disk space. You will be given this account information, and a document describing appropriate use guidelines, during registration.  Acceptance of an account signifies that you have read and agree to comply with the guidelines.

For further questions or inquiries about computer and network services, please call the ITS Help Desk at 505-984-6196.  Please identify yourself as an incoming freshman.

Computer Configuration Standards

In order to be useful to you at St. John’s, and for us to be able to help you with any problems accessing our network services, your computer needs to meet certain minimum requirements. Below we’ve provided minimum recommended configurations.

In the Buying New configuration we’ve tried to describe the minimum specification that will be useful and supportable through all four years that you will be at St. John’s.

The Bringing Old specification is primarily intended if you will bring to campus a computer you already own. This will be the bare minimum you need to survive the 2007-08 academic year, after which the requirements may change, our ability to support you may be limited, and you may have to upgrade.

Enforcing these minimum standards is part of being a good network citizen. By doing so we can ensure that all computers connecting to the network are as secure as they need to be and are capable of supporting important operating system updates, and running required anti-virus and other security programs.
