Campus Life in Santa Fe

Clubs & Organizations

Student Polity is the undergraduate student government, run by elected student officers.  Students meet weekly to discuss current issues facing the student body and decide on funding requests.  Polity sanctions student clubs, organizations, and activities.  Funding is disbursed after a formal budget request and hearing process.  Polity also serves as student representatives to the outside community, and maintains communication amongst the student body, faculty, and administration.  Students may gain voting rights by attending three or more meetings.  All are encouraged to attend.

Anmesty International
Amnesty International is a Nobel Prize-winning grassroots activist organization founded in 1961 with a mission to fight for human rights. Primarily through petition-signing and letter-writing, members urge government leaders (our own and those of the offending governments) to help individuals whose human rights are being violated. Amnesty also addresses human rights at a macro level, through focusing its attention upon particular regional areas or countries suffering an endemic human rights crisis or through its prolonged "campaigns" on pressing "topics" (such as the death penalty, women's rights, or LGBT rights). St. John’s AI works on a variety of actions and issues.  Everyone has the flexibility to choose which actions suit his or her interests and beliefs.

Meets every other Wednesday, 5:30-7:30pm beginning January 23.  Location TBA.  Contact Narges Kahvazadeh via campus mail for more information.

Project Politae
Project Politae is a group of students, tutors, and staff dedicated to service in the Santa Fe community. Members pursue projects such as building houses for Habitat for Humanity, gardening at local farms, building trails, and tutoring school children. The projects focus on improving the community and learning about environmental sustainability. Projects are chosen that give students the opportunity to volunteer on- or off- campus, to learn new skills, help people in Santa Fe, and get outside that classroom. Project Politae is open to all St. John's students. Students may participate in Saturday projects,  open meetings, and tutoring.

St. John’s Madrigals & Motets Singers
The St. John's Madrigals & Motets Singers is a 16- to 24-voice mixed chamber choir dedicated to the study and performance of a wide variety of a cappella choral music, from Renaissance madrigals and early polyphony to modern motets that stretch the boundaries of tonal harmony.  Singers from every area of the St. John's community -- undergraduates, GI students, tutors, administrative personnel and campus staff -- are warmly invited to audition and join.  Though prior singing experience and ability to sight-read vocal lines are helpful, the only requirements are the abilities to read music and carry a tune, as well as a commitment to attendance at regular weekly rehearsals and to performances near the end of each semester.

Economics Study Group
The Economics Study Group examines economic science as a division of praxeology, the study of human action.  Economic science consists of learning the “how” of human action in society as opposed to the “why” studied in philosophy and ethics.  Readings will be provided to students, and the group gathers once a week for discussion of the reading.  Last year, works of Hayek, Friedman, Mises, Rothbard, and others were studied.
