Living in the Constellation of the Canon: The Lived Experiences of African American Students Reading Great Books Literature

Role: Author

This phenomenological study explores the experiences of African American students with Great Books literature. Drawing on philosophical writings and input from African American educators, Dr. Anika Prather examines the journey of five former students who participated in a Great Books class. Through a weekend retreat and discussions, themes emerge reflecting the students’ progression and transformative insights. A culminating play titled The Table” symbolizes the unity and impact of their experiences, performed at St. John’s College. Insights gained inform Dr. Prather’s role as an educator, guiding their work in literacy education and community engagement, including forming multi-age literature circles and hosting discussions and training sessions.
