About the Dormitories
To help foster the transition to college life, all unmarried freshmen are expected to live in college dormitories, space permitting, and to take their meals in the college dining hall. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors may choose to live on campus, space permitting, or off campus by notifying the housing office according to published deadline dates. Students living on the campus are expected to conform to standards of conduct that are consistent with the educational objectives and priorities of the college. Respect and consideration for the rights of others and their need for study and rest must receive priority over other needs.
Each resident is expected to respond appropriately to requests from staff and fellow students concerning behavior that does not honor this priority. Resident assistant reports on student behavior are taken very seriously and may lead to fines, and/or community service, loss of on campus housing privileges, or even dismissal from the college, depending on the nature of the offense.
Only freshmen are guaranteed housing on campus. Continuing students who have paid their advance deposits by the published deadlines are able to select their rooms for the next year in an order determined by lottery held toward the end of the second semester.
What's in the dormitory rooms?
The main campus dormitory room inventory consists of the following:
- Wall mounted telephone with college Ethernet connection
- Hard-wired smoke detector with battery backup
- Student desk with attached desk lamp
- College chair
- Wall mounted bookcase
- Wastepaper basket
- Window mini blinds and screens
- Built-in closet
- Mirrored medicine chest with light
- Towel rack or hooks
- Bed unit consisting of a standard or extra-long twin frame, box spring and mattress
- Sheets to fit standard or extra long twin
- Mattress cover
- Pillows, Blankets
- Comforter or bedspread
- Small rug; floors are tile and chilly in winter or rugs can be purchased when you arrive
- Towels and wash clothe
- Clothes and hangers
- Warm outerwear for winter. Layers are best for high desert weather.
- Sports gear and clothing (ski equipment can be borrowed from the college, see student activities for information)
- Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
- Shoes – include at least one pair for rough terrain if you enjoy walking or hiking
- Computer and printer (not required)
- Stereo AND headphones
- Hobby and special interest items
- Toiletries and tote to take them to bathroom
- Coffee/tea mug
- Laundry supplies
Consult the student handbook for more detailed information of what is allowed in and what is not allowed in dormitories. In general when packing for college, less is best . Wait and see what you need after you arrive. There are many discount stores in Santa Fe for furnishing your dorm room.

The dorm rooms on the Santa Fe campus come with phones installed. Students can dial any other campus resident or office by using the last four digits of the phone number.
Computer Information for Incoming Freshmen
The following information is provided to help facilitate your use of computers while at college.
Dorm Connections
In order to participate in the College network, and to obtain support in accordance with the support policy below, any computer must meet the following standards:

If your computer meets these standards, we can assist you in connecting to the network. You are welcome to bring otherwise configured computers, but the IT Office will not be available to support you in their use. Please note that IT Office staff members are not available to visit dormitory rooms – all support must be performed in our workspace. For this reason, as well as, wireless access and other needs for portability, we recommend laptop/notebook computers when possible.

Student Accounts
Each student is provided with an email account. Account information will be provided during Freshman registration. You will be able to use Outlook Web Access to access your mail, from any Internet-accessible computer anywhere in the world. Instructions, rules and guidelines will be provided to you during the registration process. We look forward to meeting you in August.
Food
For those on the food service, meals are served in the Dining Hall seven days a week. A variety of foods is offered at every meal, including vegetarian and vegan. Sometimes the lines are long, but the dining hall is open long enough at every meal to accommodate all students on the food plan.
The Coffee Shop is located on the first floor of the Peterson Student Center. Snacks and meals can be purchased there all day and during some evening hours during the week. They have sandwiches, coffee, and burgers and fries. The Coffee Shop is independent of the food service in the Dining Hall, which means that students cannot use meal plan credits there. There are also a variety of snack and drink machines on campus.
Health Services
The services of the Health Center are free of charge to all students regardless of whether they carry their own health insurance or use the one available through the college. For more information contact Anne-Marie Lehmann, Nurse Practioner 505-984-6418. Appointments can be made directly by students.
Buying Books and Supplies
The Campus Bookstore stocks all books required for St. John's classes. Several translations and/or editions are available of most books on the reading list, and the Bookstore keeps a compilation of book advice/opinions/comparisons by St. John's tutors. In addition, several of the staff are either St. John's graduates or current students and will happily deluge you with their personal views.
Should you buy all your texts at the start of the year? No! Buying your books involves making choices you aren't yet equipped to make. Your tutors may have preferences, and you're going to hear lots of opinions from upperclassmen. You will also develop your own tastes. The basic things you need to start are: the Greek manual, Euclid's Elements, and the freshman Lab Manual.
The Bookstore accepts personal checks and VISA, MasterCard, or American Express credit cards. Naturally, cash is also welcome.
What the Bookstore stocks: program books, lots of fiction, poetry, reference, history, sciences, philosophy. Books to help you learn Greek or math, biographies of philosophers, books on writing, drama, art books, and music (scores and libretti).
Special orders are taken at no extra charge. There is also a small supply of sweatshirts, T-shirts, baseball caps, and other SJC paraphernalia. The Bookstore carries school supplies like pads, pens, binders, and pencils, and even laundry detergent and some basic toiletries. The store also offers a fax service.
