"One of the most beautiful facets of St. John’s is the sense of community. Student activities plays a unique role in this regard as one of the few opportunities students have to interact with fellow Johnnies of different class years. The camaraderie built through participation in such extracurriculars as rock climbing, backpacking, whitewater rafting, and our intramural program is a wonderful thing to witness. We really do have a world-class playground here in Santa Fe, and plenty of great opportunities to take advantage of it!" --Mike Thurber
Student Activities Center (Gym)
The Student Activities Center is the headquarters for most of the college-organized and student organization activities on campus. The 26,000 square-foot Student Activities Center houses personal fitness equipment and athletic facilities including a full-size gymnasium, weight room, and two racquetball/squash courts, as well as shower and locker rooms. In addition, three tennis courts, a soccer field, a 1/8th-mile track, and a nine-hole disc golf course are located next to the Student Activities Center.
There is an array of classes offered through the Student Activities Center, from Yoga to Tango. The College Community can borrow sports and outdoor equipment free of charge. A college ID is required in order to enter the gym and to check out any equipment.
Check the SAC Bulletin Board across from the Coffee Shop or in the Gym for latest news and updated information. The SAC Front Desk can be reached at ext. 6149
Classes, Clubs & Activities
We have many clubs and activities, including an astronomy club in which students have access to telescopes and a portable planetarium as well as Santa Fe’s tremendous night sky; Chrysostomos, the student drama club; a yearly musical directed by our artist in residence, Roy Rogison; RPG groups; a student newspaper and a literary magazine; and various study groups for interests not covered by the curriculum. There is a pottery studio available for student use and a number of classes are offered on campus, including Karate, black and white photography, fencing, yoga, soccer, swing dance, ballroom dance, tango, and other dance classes.
Outdoor Program
Our location in northern New Mexico lends itself to an extremely active outdoor program at St. John’s College Santa Fe. The campus is situated between desert and high alpine environments, so students have the opportunity to participate in hiking/backpacking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, skiing, snowboarding, and other activities. Outdoor outings are led by our Outdoor Program Coordinator, Mike Thurber, who has more than 12 years of experience guiding and instructing in the western United States. In addition to a wealth of entertainment activities in the outdoors, St. John’s students are also involved in Atalaya Search and Rescue, the mountain rescue team that responds to distress calls for the mountains above the campus.
Intramurals
Intramural sports are a mainstay of campus life. Sports rotate according to season and include Ultimate Frisbee, basketball, dodge ball, and floor hockey. We try not to take ourselves too seriously, so games are competitive but fun. What we might lack in talent or experience, we make up for in enthusiasm. Four-square is a favorite game on the Santa Fe campus.
Starting Your Own Club
If a club you want doesn’t exist, we usually have the resources to help you find other like-minded students and get your new program off the ground.
