Current Practices
We currently recycle the following items on campus:
- Compact Florescent Lamps
- Dry Cell Batteries (not car or marine “wet” batteries), lithium, alkaline, etc.
- Electronic Devices that may have lead (thumb drives, monitors, cables, etc)
- Cardboard
- Plastic (all grades)
- Glass (clear and colored)
We use Green Seal cleaning products to protect our waste stream
We will complete an 18 month campus lighting retrofit this summer (2009) which includes:
- Converting all older florescent tubes from mechanical ballast T-12 to electronic T-8 28 watt tubes
- Adding motion sensors with photocells to all public meeting spaces, labs, hallways, classrooms, bathrooms, storerooms and many offices.
- Converting task lighting from incandescent to compact florescent
Conducted an “energy” audit for all energy consuming devices in the campus dormitories:
We participate in the Power New Mexico (PNM) energy saver programs to install power monitoring devices on campus air conditioning compressors to reduce “run-time” during summer peak usage periods.
All showers and toilets have been retrofitted with low water valves and shower heads.
Install only plants that are native or adapted for the dry Santa Fe climate.
All new construction to have the goal of L.E.E.D. silver certification.
Installed waterless urinals in men’s bathrooms in Petersen, and Student Activity Center with a goal expand to all other buildings in the future.
Working towards the goal of L.E.E.D. for existing buildings for Meem Library, and Evans Science Laboratory
Future Goals
- Install variable frequency drives (v.f.d.) on all air handling motors
- Install solar panels on Meem Library and Petersen Student Center
- Further reduce our waste stream
