JOB TITLE: Director of Student Activities

NATURE OF DUTIES:
Primary Duties:
- Provides leadership and is responsible for directing and budgeting for college-wide athletic programs, including intramurals programs; and for all outdoor recreational activities including annual rafting and hiking excursions and weekend trips; works closely with and has oversight of the athletics and outdoors program coordinator in the above areas. May serve as a coach or instructor for some such activities. Weekend and evening hours sometimes required.
- Manages and administers the Student Activities Centre (SAC). Including the purchase, maintenance and retention of athletic and outdoors equipment in order to ensure its proper and safe use. Works cooperatively with the Offices of Buildings and Grounds (maintenance and cleaning) and Safety and Security (alarm system and building access). Schedules hours of operation for the SAC; tracks usage and organizes special events in the facility.
- Organizes, directs and budgets for a number of extracurricular classes in order to provide students and other members of the college community with leisure and recreational opportunities (such as, but not limited to, ballet, yoga, fencing karate, Aikido, Jui Jitsu, painting and pottery), and coordinates the hiring of coaches and instructors for such classes. Oversight of the Search and Rescue Team.
- Publishes a student activities guide in advance of each semester indicating the schedule of activities for that semester. Organizes an annual student activities fair for various student clubs and groups, to be held during student orientation.
- With the assistance of the athletics and outdoors coordinator hires, supervises trains and evaluates student aides who assist in the operation of the SAC and with various activities.
- Purchases and maintains athletic and outdoor equipment with an eye toward safe and appropriate use.
Additional Duties
- Maintains a working relationship with other educational institutions, various sport and recreational organizations, local and state agencies, and in general with the Santa Fe community.
- Administers the rewarding at the years end of students who excel in athletics, working.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: The Director of Student Activities position is a professional management position with a broad range of organizational responsibilities related to the operation of the SAC and various student activities. It requires the ability to foster an atmosphere of cooperation between those members of the staff who report to him/her and are jointly responsible for supporting the various student activities. The realm of student activities in the college community is seen both as a support of the academic program and a potential extension of the classroom. Hence, the director should be teacher and mentor of students in the broader sense, not only in the mere practice of the various activities, but in the qualities of leadership, teamwork, thoughtfulness and spirit that they can help to foster.
SUPERVISION RECIEVED: Reports to the Assistant Dean.
SUPERVISION GIVEN: Supervises the Athletics and Outdoors Program Coordinator, College Events Coordinator, and a number of student aides.
COMPENSATION: Minimum: $51,597 and an excellent benefits package.
STATUS: Full-time, Exempt
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s Degree.
- 5 years relevant experience organizing and administering student activities at the collegiate level.
- Minimum 3 years Management experience; the ability to foster cooperation and teamwork amongst reporting staff (and amongst student workers and leaders).
- One year budgeting experience.
- Sport and outdoors ability and experience; a proven capacity to organize a variety of sport, social and recreational activities.
- Familiarity with the St. John’s Program of Study.
- Must have excellent written and verbal skills to communicate well with students, faculty and staff.
- Ability to display leadership, creativity and innovation, and to counsel and relate to students in a sensitive and caring manner.
- CPR and Wilderness First Responder Training.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- St. John’s degree.
- Engagement with and interest in the St. John’s program of study.
- Proficiency or Knowledge of current primary extracurricular activities at the college: hiking, rafting, camping, skiing, soccer, fencing, rafting, dancing.
- Teaching experience, preferably at the college level.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and requires excellent physical stamina, manual and finger dexterity, bending, lifting, stooping, and walking. Ability to participate in a number of indoor and outdoor sport activities. Early morning, evening, and weekend work required.
