Community Lending

Town Borrowers: Adults who are permanent residents of Annapolis may be granted permission to borrow books. There is no charge for students enrolled in St. John's continuing education programs during the semester in which they are enrolled. All other Annapolis residents are charged $45 per year or $15 per any four-month period. Upon presentation of identification and completion of the town borrower agreement (available at the circulation desk), qualifying individuals will be issued a card that must be presented each time books are checked out.

Up to five books may be borrowed concurrently, for a loan period of one month. Non-book materials (audiotapes, videotapes, etc.) and some art books are not available for loan. Books may be renewed up to three times. The library does not accept telephone renewals; books must be brought into the library to be renewed.

Books requested by another patron must be returned within one week of notification. Notices will be sent through the mail, so please be sure your address is current with the library. Town Borrowers cannot request items from other patrons.

Borrowers are charged $1.00 a day for any overdue item until it is returned. If an item becomes more than three weeks overdue, it will be considered lost and replacement charges will apply.

Failure to return materials in a timely fashion may result in borrowing privileges being withdrawn.

Overdue Charges: Overdue materials are a source of frustration to other borrowers if they cannot obtain what they need to meet their own needs or deadlines. The library therefore charges overdue fines to ensure that materials are returned in a timely manner. Materials should always be returned directly to the library's circulation desk. It is inadvisable to send materials through Campus Mail, US mail or via a friend. The library cannot pardon overdue or lost charges that may result by returning materials in these ways. Overdue items must be returned and fines paid before the borrower may continue to borrow from the library.

Books not returned by closing time on the day of call in are charged a flat fee of $10.00 per item. A flat fee is charged rather than an incremental fee (for example, $1.00 per day) because it is imperative that as many books as possible be returned on the day of call in.

Other than at call in, periodicals, audiotapes, videotapes, and recalled books not returned by the closing time on the given due date are charged $1.00/day to a maximum of $10.00 per item.

The borrower will receive several overdue notices and if the material is not returned within three weeks of its due date, it will be considered lost (see below).

Lost Charges: Library materials are loaned to library users in trust that they will be returned promptly and in good condition. The library charges a flat rate for each category of material, plus a processing fee for the work involved in locating, ordering, and cataloging the replacements The charges for each category are as follows:

Library materials always remain the property of the college and must be returned whenever possible, no matter how much time has elapsed. If you find something and return it to us, we will gladly refund you the replacement cost, minus the $10.00 overdue charge or processing fee.

For most information or clarification about these policies, please contact the library at 410-626-2548.
