Introduction
A St. John's education is an education for life, not an outfitting for a career; on the other hand, it is also a tremendous basis for virtually any subsequent pursuit.
The Career Services Office provides resources and support for all aspects of career and job searches, including graduate and professional school applications, from initial exploration through making the transition from college to your post-college pursuits.
One-on-One
An important part of the process, and a first stop for many students, is individual career counseling. The Director of Career Services meets with students and alumni as requested, for conversations about both broad issues and specific needs, including pre-med and pre-law counseling, application strategies for graduate programs, scholarships, and jobs, research into potential fields of endeavor, and all aspects of beginning or changing careers. The Internship Coordinator counsels students about internship opportunities and applications.
Resources and Events
The office has a library of materials in support of career searches: Bulletins from graduate, post-baccalaureate, and professional programs
- Tests (GRE, LSAT, MCAT, GMAT, etc.)
- Scholarships, fellowships, and grants
- Study abroad programs
- Teaching abroad programs
- Self-assessment
- Job search strategies
- Resumes and cover letters
We put out a monthly newsletter, Praxis, with information about the Hodson Internship Program and other internship opportunities, fellowships and scholarships, forums and events sponsored by the Career Services Office, graduate programs, summer jobs, study abroad opportunities, job openings, and other articles and announcements related to your post-SJC plans and how to prepare for them.
We sponsor frequent on-campus events with speakers and recruiters from programs (e.g. Peace Corps, JET), graduate departments, general career areas, and specific companies. These are announced in the newsletters and with posters on campus. At Homecoming in the fall, a panel of alumni in various fields talk about what they do and how they got to where they are.
Fellowships and Scholarships
Check out this brief video on the Gates Cambridge Scholarship!
St. John's students have an impressive track record in the national scholarship competitions. The Fellowship Committee holds a meeting in the spring for juniors, to begin the application process for those interested in competing for the Rhodes, Marshall, Gates, Mitchell, Fulbright, Jack Kent Cooke, and other scholarships; they also review applications, interview applicants, make recommendations, and arrange mock interviews for candidates who make it to the interview stage.

The Hodson Internship Program
The Hodson Trust Internship Program, made possible through a generous grant from the Hodson Trust, provides funding for up to twenty-five summer internships for undergraduate students. Students can apply for funding for otherwise unfunded internships, or design their own projects, working directly with mentors in their field. The Internship Coordinator assists students throughout the process of finding and applying for internships, whether or not they plan to compete for Hodson funding.
Community Service
Project Politae organizes students to participate in volunteer programs in the local area: after-school tutoring, environmental clean-up and maintenance programs, and other community service.
Student Employment Services and Part-time Employment
The office maintains a bulletin board (in the first floor hall of Pinkney) with listings of local area job opportunities for current students, including office work, child care, yard work, restaurants, retail and a great deal of miscellany.
Networking and Alumni Mentoring Program
St. John's alumni are passionate both about the college and about their careers. We have alumni in all academic disciplines and job fields who are willing to consult with students and alumni interested in their pursuits. Whether you are still considering a variety of pursuits, about to settle on a career path, curious about particular graduate departments or businesses, or exploring options in any other way, one of your best sources of information and advice is alumni out doing what you want to do. The Career Services Office can put you in touch with the alumni who'll best be able to assist you. For juniors: the Virgil Initiative offers you the opportunity to have an alumnus/a as a mentor, for conversations about your transition to the next stage of your life. Contact the Career Services Office for information on how to acquire your own Virgil.
